Congress Weekly – April 10, 2020

Hello MSU!
This week’s Congress meeting began with a discussion about the logistics of the Instagram Quarantine Challenges. Misha Fotovati, Coordinator of Internal Affairs, presented the Quarantine Challenges: each week, Marianopolis students can take a picture of themselves completing the challenge and post it on their Instagram story for a chance to win a prize. The first challenge will be “Rise and Grind.” Congress members deliberated on the prizes: the consensus appeared to be having a random draw for the winner of each challenge, who will then receive an Amazon gift card. In addition, submissions to the Quarantine Challenges will be featured on the MSU’s brand new Instagram account!
Next, Laurence Liang, Coordinator of External Affairs, provided an update on the virtual job fair, which is happening on Thursday, April 16th from 6 to 8 PM. As of right now, seven volunteer organizations and companies will be present, with two having yet to confirm. Laurence also presented a pass/fail proposal from Vanier’s External Affairs member. Vanier’s member of External Affairs proposed to all COAC (the Coalition of Anglophone CEGEPs) student unions to support a pass/fail system and then approach the Quebec government with a letter drafted on behalf of COAC’s student unions. Misha and President Aria Khiabani remarked that the idea of a pass/fail system currently does not have significant interest from the student body. Should a petition supporting this garner strong interest, Congress would consider holding a General Assembly or survey to gather the opinions of the student body before coming to a decision on this issue.
With classes being moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress is also carrying out its events online. Andrew Petrecca-Berthelet, Coordinator of Social Activities, is planning a movie showing of Wayne’s World on Facebook in the coming weeks. He also suggested combining previously planned shows, such as the Talent Show and Comedy Show, into one big event. Similarly, Aria is arranging a Coffee House event.
Lastly, Trudy Ste. Croix, our Student Life animator, issued a call for submissions for the Intercollegiate Singing Competition. The prizes to be won include a $150, $100 and $50 gift card! Submissions should be sent to Trudy by MIO before Wednesday at 11:59 PM.
