Emmanuel Macron: The first French president in 20 years to be re-elected

April 24th, 2022 was a historical day in France’s history as Macron defeats Lepen by 58.55% to 41.45% to become the first president to be re-elected in 20 years. In these times of war and uncertainty, Macron has a colossal task ahead of him as he promises to unite the country.

“An answer must be found to the anger and disagreements that led many of our compatriots to vote for the extreme right.”

Macron announced in his speech.

Although Macron has won the poll, only 72% of the population has voted which equals one in three voters who did vote. This is considered the lowest participation since 1969. Macron said that he will maintain price caps on gas at electricity and a government rebate on fuel prices if energy cost continues to rise.

He also plans to implement a pension reform to change the retirement age to 65 by 2031. Internationally, Macron wants to control clandestine migration, deepen defence cooperation and develop a European economic growth model.
