Congress Weekly: 4P Project Full Cost on the College, Welcome-Back Party, and Mari’s Got Talent

As winter roared in with snowstorms, Congress discussed hosting the Winter Carnival Party to bring some summer nostalgia back in the house. Following the talent show proposal and discussions on the Marianopolis Volunteer Network.

Winter Carnival Beach Party

The Congress will host a welcome-back party in the student lounge on January 31st to celebrate the start of the winter semester. This beach-themed winter carnival party is not only welcoming students back to the college environment after the long break, but also bringing some hints of summer sunshine back, to eliminate the tiresome cold weather. Congress will be giving out free ice cream, jamming summer-themed music, and setting up the beach photo booth for students to immerse themselves in the feel of summer. The initial planning for the party seemed like a dilemma between chaos and fun, where the incompatible summer wear and this week’s cold weather may be hard to accommodate, which may even make students decide not to go to the party. Congress is discussing how to maximize the fun without creating too much chaos. Check out the MSU Instagram page for full information on the party!

4P: College’s continuing at full cost

In September 2022, the Coordinator of Social Justice, Matthew Homa, initiated the 4P project with the Social Justice Committee’s aim to promote social justice and gender equality by providing free period products to students around the college. After five months of operation, the college decided to transform this student-led initiative into the college’s responsibility, for which Marianopolis will continue to provide period products to students at full cost.

Proposing the Marianopolis Talent Show

The coordinator of student advocacy, David Li and the coordinator of external affairs, Cindy Li presented their proposal for the Marianopolis Talent Show. More information will be available through MSU’s Instagram and Join-A-Club Day!

The show is, as David puts it, “for showing your talent,” as there will not be any winners, and all profits from tickets will go to charity. This is the second time Marianopolis has tried to put on a show like this, where initially in 2019 and 2020 the Mari’s Got Talent Club held the show but unfortunately did not continue thereafter due to COVID. After a meeting with Student Life Animator Adam Reider, Congress outlined one dress rehearsal in March and the show’s date afterwards. However, Adam highlights the problem of the college’s “tight space” for accommodating all the performers to practice before the date of dress rehearsal. The accommodation of clubs and performers with space and room bookings will be discussed by the Congress in the future.

Yearbook in progress

The Coordinator of Communications, Emily Ho, is in the process of editing the yearbook. This year’s yearbook will be divided into two sections. The first section will feature school-led activities such as JACD, Wear Your Culture Day, Karaoke, Coffee House, etc. The second half of the yearbook will be about the club activities, and Emily is accepting satisfactory photos from all club activities that will be put into the yearbook.

Winter Info Session

The second college information session of this year will take place on February 9.

Congress presents the Marianopolis Volunteer Network

Recently, Congress collaborated with Marianopolis’ CIUSSS Volunteers Club to create a network that contains almost all the volunteer positions possibly found for students at Marianopolis. The MVN contains volunteer opportunities from clubs, student life animators, charities, volunteer coordinators, and their committees. The information is available through a spreadsheet, which is accessible on Congress’ website. The volunteer positions listed contain categories such as general health care, elder care, shelters, food drives, and much more! However, Congress faced the issue of not having enough exposure to the student body because of the limited ways to access the spreadsheet.

Currently, Congress has considered making MVN available on other social media platforms as well, but the overwhelming amount of data makes it seem impossible.

Stay tuned for more events during Black History Month and Valentine’s Day!
