Climate Week, Spring Fling, Food truck and Yearbook: Congress weekly – April 1st, 2022

Women’s Cabaret

Every year, Professor Dolores Chew and some students organize a Women’s Cabaret in honour of International Women’s Month. This year, the event will be taking place on April 14th, during AP. Similar to that of the previous Open Mic Night in February, students will be able to share their stories, recite poetry or songs, and talk about anything they want to on stage in the Student Lounge. The point of the event is to create a safe environment for all students who want to share something with others while promoting female empowerment. Interested students can send a message to Professor Chew by MIO or by email (d.chew@marianopolis.edu). Posts for the events are already up, so feel free to look at them on Instagram or Facebook!

Climate Week

Climate week (April 19th to April 22nd) starts on a Tuesday since the Monday is a holiday. On the first day, there will be an awareness booth (led by members of the Social Justice Committee) for information on current environmental issues.

On Wednesday, there will be a recycling drive to collect small electronic devices and stationery (highlighters, pencils, pens, etc..). At the same time, a fundraiser for either Team Trees or Team Seas will take place.

On the third day, Thursday, there will be an organic soap-making session and a potential plant sale in collaboration with the Urban Roots Club. Finally, on Friday, which happens to be Earth Day, students will be encouraged to wear green and, to finish off the week, a parks-cleaning activity will take place that afternoon (if it rains, it will be Saturday).

The Greenspace Initiative of the Social Justice Committee, which, among other things, will install many more plants in certain student spaces, will also be materialized during Climate Week.

Spring Fling

Recently, Congress has been promoting an upcoming party for all Marianopolis as well as non-Marianopolis students interested. The Spring Fling is a 70s-themed party happening at Palace Reception Hall (1717 Blvd. Le Corbusier, Laval) with a maximum of 300 attendees.

With its DJ and a cash bar, it is an opportunity for all students to meet new people, discover new things and groove the night away in a friendly, open, and comfortable environment. Currently, many tickets have been sold, so make sure to hurry and buy yours if you do not have one yet!

More information can be found on Facebook and Instagram posts of MSU Congress. The link to buy the tickets is the following:

Mr. Puffs Food Truck

On April 19th, during Activity Period, a Mr. Puffs Food Truck will be stationed in the parking lot next to Marianopolis. While this event will be further advertised as the date approaches, make sure to remember that the food is not catered for everyone (and will thus be limited). Stay alert for updates to make sure you don’t miss out!

Elections

The week of April 4th to April 8th will also be the presidential and vice-presidential campaign week. Congress wants students to keep an eye out for the elections, particularly on the MSU Congress website, where students will be able to find every candidate’s profile with a statement and a picture, and on the Marianopolis Student Union and Class of 2023 Facebook Groups as well as the @maristudentunion Instagram. Be sure to attend the debate hosted by The News Blitz on April 7th during AP, in the student lounge. It is a great way to hear about the candidate’s platform in order to make the most informed vote possible.

Cultural Week

The week before Climate week, which is from April 11th to April 15th, will also be full of events, as part of Congress’ Cultural Week. On Monday, April 11th, an info-booth on Ramadan will be placed all day in front of Wayne’s. On Wednesday, April 13th, San Giuseppe will be celebrated by handing out zeppole (little Italian doughnuts), a traditional dessert of that day, and by displaying informative posters about San Giuseppe around the school. Trudy of Student Life says that there might be a Cabane à sucre little activity on Thursday, but that is yet to confirm.

Holi will also be celebrated during the week, with traditional drinks, students encouraged to wear colourful clothing and a Henna artist available, as well as Easter, with an easter egg hunt around the school (with little chocolates inside!!); however, it is still to be confirmed on what day these will take place. Make sure to be on the lookout for more updates on these cool events happening in a few weeks!

Middle Ground

On April 12th, during AP, students will be able to go to A-107 and A-109 to partake in a discussion about differing opinions on various subjects. Middle Ground, inspired by Jubilee’s activity of the same name, will be an opportunity for students to deliberate their points of view in a calm environment with fellow students, as part of Yu Ran Wang of the Social Justice Committee’s info campaign on social activism. Marianopolis social worker Amanda Guay will also be present in case anyone has any questions.

Yearbook Committee

Seol Han, Director of Communications, also wants club executives which have been contacted by the Yearbook Committee to answer their MIOS. The Yearbook Committee requires more photos from clubs to lead their project to completion!! All clubs are encouraged to share their photos to be included in this year’s yearbook!  The drop-box is here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EWPVhFEQg66xe3EHmvyYf1upbmwPI03P

Sexual Violence Prevention Training:

Congress members also want to remind students that those who complete the (government-mandated) training for the prevention of sexual violence for CEGEP students before April 13th will obtain a raffle ticket, with prizes such as AirPods, Escape Rooms, and gift cards. The link to the training can be found on Ms. Guay’s latest MIO and on the pop-ups on the Omnivox home page, and the training in itself is comprised of 4, 10-minute blocks that do not reset if you exit (the progress is saved). The training is mandatory for all students, either way, so you might as well do it before April 13th and have the chance to win prizes!
