Marianopolis College Library celebrates “Poem in Your Pocket” Day

Staying true to its long-lasting tradition of celebrating National Poetry Month, the Marianopolis College Library held its usual promotional activities all throughout the month of April, though this year, something was new: Poem in Your Pocket Day!

An incredibly enriching initiative, the Poem in Your Pocket Day, was held this last Friday, is an international movement that seeks to center poetry in daily interactions. Students were encouraged to pick up one of many poems displayed on the shelves of the library, carefully selected by the Academy of American Poets in conjunction with the League of Canadian Poets, and carry them in their pocket, share them with friends and family or on social media using the hashtag #PocketPoem.

“The intent of the project is to make the magic of poetry easily available,” shared Amy MacLean, librarian and the main organizer of this event. “The idea is to make it easy for people to pick up a poem and to share these poems with friends, family, and even strangers.”

Hoping to cater to French-language poetry enthusiasts as well, the library also participated in la Journée du poème à porter on Thursday, this time organized by La poésie partout. A similar counterpart to Poem in Your Pocket Day, this time, remarkable French poems were displayed, while also offering an exceptional multilingual feature called citations à porter.

The Library continuously strives to create educational and entertaining activities to mark special occasions, and we hope this one was a successful opportunity for students to become inspired and take a moment to reflect!
