Coordinators Debate Winter 2023 Hosted by the News Blitz!

Hey Marianopolites!

On April 11th, the Marianopolis student body was assembled in the student lounge to watch the MSU Congress debate for the positions of Coordinator of Social Justice, Student  Advocacy & Social Activities

Here are some of the main points of the candidates’ platforms that were brought up during Tuesday’s debate.

Social Activities: (3 Candidates)

The Coordinator of Social Activities is responsible for creating social activities to enrich student life at the College. 

Wendi Liu

Wendi, a first-year Arts & Science student, would like to implement diverse activities as well as easy student communication between the student body and Congress with regard to the choice of social activities. Wendi finds that students are disengaged with the activities put in place by the 2022-2023 Congress and promises she will make activities more exciting and engaging if she is elected.

Hala Aboasali

Hala, a first-year Arts & Science student, will make sure Congress is involved in every step of social activities’ processes and promises to make sure events cater to everyone’s interest by hosting multilateral activities.

Kiarash Takhsha

Kiarash, a first-year Health Sciences student, plans to host tournaments and special days during the winter & summer season.  He plans to be very direct with students and frequently ask for their opinions, in order to make sure the activities hosted by Congress will be fun for everyone.

Student Advocacy: (5 Candidates)

The Coordinator of Student Advocacy is responsible for safeguarding the rights of students at Marianopolis. 

Nathan Thomas

Nathan, a first-year Health Sciences student, plans to obtain student discounts with external companies for the Marianopolis student body, as well as bring modifications to referendum procedures. Nathan firmly believes the College doesn’t respect student wishes and promises to make the complex grade appeal system clear and simple if elected.

Tianen Zhang

Tianen, a first-year Psychology student, mainly plans to reform and challenge the current constitution. Tianen believes there is currently a problem with transparency vis-à-vis the administration and the students. 

Aashish Kalachand Bissoon

Aashish, a first-year Health Sciences student, plans to ban pop quizzes from Marianopolis College in collaboration with the administration. He acknowledges Marianopolis students are very stressed, and he believes banning pop quizzes will help minimize that.

Alexander Laurin

Alexander, a first-year Arts & Science student, promises to increase transparency, execution, and communication. Alexander also plans to let students know about academic & co-curricular opportunities such as internship programs, scholarships & financial aid as he believes not many people know about them. 

Social Justice: (3 Candidates)

The Coordinator of Social Justice is responsible for promoting awareness of social justice issues among the student body through special events, fundraisers, and awareness campaigns

David Xiang Long Ji

David, a first-year Health Sciences student, promises to allow students to dig deeper into every culture’s values in order to counter stereotypes associated with those cultures.

Harnoor (Nora) Malhi

Nora, a first-year Social Science student, aims to lead digestible information campaigns as she believes current students are disengaged because campaigns do not provide clear information.

Karimata Barry

Karimata, a first-year Arts & Science student, plans to implement volunteering days, offer more resources for mental health, and increase collaboration between clubs!
