Congress Weekly: Coffee House and Intercollegiate Events

On March 15, 2024, Congress followed up on the Coffee House event and discussed club sponsorships.

The Coffee House event was a success! Sandwiches, coffee, and cereal were offered to students in the student lounge: all the food available was fair trade. The overall experience was pleasant!

Congress members also discussed two major upcoming intercollegiate events : Maritalks Dare to Dream event, the Hallyu show, and MariHacks. The Hallyu show is taking place on April 6th at the Olympia Theatre, and the 48-hours hackathon will be held at the college on April 5-6. As for the Maritalks event, it took place on March 18.

All three clubs asked the MSU for sponsorships in order to finance their events. Congress then reflected on what process should be used in order to decide the amount invested into a club. In fact, the MSU exercises financial control by deciding which clubs should receive how much funding. This role requires a transparent and fair way to decide how much should be allocated to each specific club since some club events, such as the Hallyu show, need a lot of funding. In fact, MSU wishes to contribute to student projects by financing their various activities while taking in consideration the fairness of allocating these sums. In the case of the Hallyu show, for example, Congress members decided to vote on the amount that should be allocated by taking the average of all proposed sums. The MSU decided to sponsor the three events mentioned because they are large and intercollegiate.
