Budget Surplus, Wear Your Culture Day and Club of the Month: Congress Weekly—October 7

With midterms out of the way, Congress members—slightly sleep-deprived—discussed the planning of exciting upcoming events and making use of the budget surplus (spoiler alert: it’s a lot).

Upcoming events

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13th: Information session on the Disneyland and New York City trips. Information about the trips will be shared to those attending in the auditorium.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18th: Wear Your Culture Day: more information can be found below!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20th: Breast Cancer Fundraiser at the Alcove.

OCTOBER 25th or 27th: Mr. Puffs food truck at the courtyard during AP.

Budget over 240k

Amassed over the pandemic, the budget exceeded Congress’ expectations. Vice President of Finance Katarina Bunakova and other members discussed ways Congress could spend the money.

  1. Philanthropic Donations

Congress could assist the Social Justice Committee’s fundraisers by matching or doubling the amount donated by students.

  1. Financing Fundraisers

If the Social Justice Committee’s fundraisers need extra financial help, Congress could provide funds.

  1. Club Investment

Although Congress has already increased its spending on clubs this semester, this budget surplus would potentially allow even more money to be allocated to student initiatives.

  1. Financing Personal Passion Projects

Many students at Marianopolis work on personal projects outside of established clubs. Congress hopes that financing passion projects will enrich student life at the College.

Wear Your Culture Day

On October 18th, the Social Activities and Cultural Affairs Committees invite all Marianopolis students to show off their flags or traditional clothing. The committees will invite dressed-up students to participate in a cultural parade.

Coordinator of Cultural Affairs Andrew Chen and Coordinator of Social Activities Jamie-Ly Costa-Nelson will also offer food samples of various cultures. Students dressed up will eat for free! More information about ticket prices will be available during the week on the Cultural Affairs Committee’s Instagram page.

Finally, while waiting in line, all students will be welcomed to sign their name in their mother tongue on a poster.

All activities will take place in the Student Lounge.

Club of the Month

MariFilms is September’s club of the month. Congratulations to all the executives as well as all the members!

Throughout the month, MariFilms hosted bi-weekly movie screenings and created an active online space for film-related discussion. Their terrific—and somewhat intense—online recruitment efforts also deserve a round of applause.

Congress will post on Instagram and Vice President Luc Bojorquez-Lopez will conduct a News Blitz interview in honour of MariFilms’ efforts this month.

Honourable mentions also go to the Montreal Chinese Hospital Volunteering Club and to the Marianopolis Debate Society.

Mari Volunteering Network

Coordinator of Charities and Volunteering Maria Ma has added new volunteering activities to the spreadsheet. Many opportunities are now available at https://www.msucongress.com/volunteering. A new feedback form has been added as well, which allows students to indicate what type of volunteering opportunities they’d like to see more of. Maria also welcomes all other types of feedback.
