Congress Weekly: Orange Shirt Day, Lacrosse, Club Collaborations and More

On September 15th, Congress welcomed the first-year members to their team. With this week’s special guest Leticia Yansen, they discussed a few issues pertaining to the student body, as well as the general direction of their mandate.

Orange Shirt Day

As National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is coming soon on September 30th, orange buttons will be handed out at Alcove-B to honor the occasion. The date will be confirmed soon. Furthermore, plans to invite Indigenous artists to school are in motion, so stay tuned for updates. Plans to reboot the display of children’s toys in front of the library were also discussed.

Origins of Lacrosse

On September 19th, Danny Stacey, former Kahnawake Survival School Indigenous Studies teacher, is coming over during AP to teach students about the origins of Lacrosse, as well as how to play. Though this activity counts toward ponderation, it’s also a good way to have fun and learn something new! You can sign up via Omnivox’s Student Life section, but hurry up, as spots are limited!

Club Collaborations

Many potential collaboration requests were brought to the table, including an outdoor movie screening event with Urban Roots (the proceeds will go to charity), a duathlon with the running and cycling club, as well as a Cultural Food Festival with the Culinary Club. Specifics are yet to be announced, but be sure to check the clubs’ social media pages for updates!

Logo Redesign and Yearbook

The idea of rebranding the Congress logo was pitched, and plans to host an open design contest are currently being discussed. Rebecca also mentioned a dedicated yearbook page for each club. Be sure to take pictures of your activities throughout the year for a chance to be featured!

Committees

All Congress members are either done or nearing the end of their committee formation. Relevant information about applications will be communicated soon.

REMINDER: The Congress office is in A-159, next to the A-wing lockers. Office Hours can currently be found on their Instagram page.
