An Exciting “First Day of School”

Tuesday, August 22nd, at AP, students from all corners of the campus gathered on the front lawn to celebrate the beginning of the new semester. Festivities were endless as our first years learned about the abundance of free ice cream that the MSU seems to have, and the second years got to try all the new flavours!

To quote Alice Platt, a second-year Arts and Science student, “I feel so lucky to go to a school where they give us free ice cream all the time, ’cause I love ice cream!”

Lines took up the length of the yard as people waited for food, games, photos and art. These activities were definitely something to see. The photobooth was a huge hit, giving students a space to reconnect with their friends while also wearing silly hats, and who doesn’t love that? Another booth that attracted a lot of attention was the tote bag painting booth. Run by some Arts and Science students, everyone was so excited to decorate their very own tote bag, customizing it with their very own style and vision.

So yes, there was painting, there were hats, there was ice cream, hotdogs, and even Taylor Swift playing in the background! But nothing was quite as big of a success as bubble soccer.

Ezra Grossman, an Arts and Science student, commented on his experience in the bubble, saying “I feel great!” right after leaving the field.

As a reporter, I feel it is most important to immerse myself in that which I am reporting on. So into the bubble I went! To say it was fun would be an understatement, because it was also terrifying. To be fair, I was not wearing it properly, nor was I playing it the right way, so that might have been on me. But despite my awkward bubble experience, I’d say that all in all, it’s a super cool way to spend a bit of your day. If rolling around on the ground doesn’t sell you, then maybe watching other people roll around on the ground will. Trust me, it’s hilarious.

At the end of the day, this event got an overwhelming amount of support, seeing as people loved this excuse to hang out with their friends and to meet new people outside in the sun.

As Jacquie Hayes, a second-year student said, “It’s sunny outside, there’s lots of people, and it’s so nice to see everyone back at school.”

The MSU worked super hard to put this event together for us, and they seemed to have enjoyed themselves as well!

Vice President Andrew, when asked about what he thought of the turnout, said “it defied our expectations, and everything turned out really great”.

Overall, it’s clear that this year’s welcome back carnival was a huge hit, with overwhelming support from students and faculty.

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the semester has in store!
